Full Report of Galileoscope Project in April

In concordance with the activities of 100 Hours of Astronomy, Galileoscope Project was launched during the first week of April, and it extended through the rest of the month to traget thousands of Syrians. Activities were held in Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, Safita, and Der Azzor. Thousands of Syrians had their first look through the telescope. It was a great experience to the members of the association who thrived to present a positive picture of astronomy to the public by giving them the opportunity to look for the first time through the telescope and answering their questions about astronomy and the celestial bodies, especially that the places were so crowded that the supervisors complained of severs stress during the activities.

The Galileoscope project started with the activities of 100 Hours of Astronomy between 1 and 5 April, as six big activities were held. You can have a look at these through a seperate page (please click here). Afterwards the project continued according to the schedule, with cancellation of some sessions due to weather conditions or administrative considerations. All activities included observation of the Moon and Saturn with a simple explanation about the main constellations and stars. Thousands of leaflets, association magazine, and star charts were distributes free of charge to the public.

We now present a quick view of the activities that were organized after 100 Hours of Astronomy...

On Thursday 9 April a special activity was held in the wide yard in fron of the Omayad Mosque in the Old City of Damascus. This region was so crowded in the early evening and the activity was such a success!

Afterwards Aleppo witnessed a special activity by observation in Nile Street. Lots of people enjoyed the view and the telescopes were right at the street!

In Hama, and on 10 April, another special activity was regulated beside the amazing waterwheels or 'Norias'. The activity started at about 7:00 pm when people started to inquire about the event while our members were mounting their three telescopes. Only one hour later the place was so crowded that we had to mounth a fourth telescope in the yard. It was a great activity in this city, as hundreds of people, ranging from 5 to 60 years, had their first look through the telescope.

And in Safita a special activity was held on 11 April. Although it was rather cold and cloudy, a lot of people wanted to be there in the event. The activity started with observation and then extended into a lecture in the outdoors. Many persons stayed out until early morning.
